A Warm Welcome from the Host
From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by Michael, the friendly owner and host of Wilson Hollow. Even though we showed up late at night, he made sure we were all set up comfortably, guiding us to our spot and showing us around. Michael’s hospitality made it clear that Wilson Hollow isn’t just another campsite—it’s a labor of love.
From Overgrown to Outstanding: The Story Behind Wilson Hollow
Wilson Hollow has a deep-rooted history. Originally acquired by Michael’s wife’s great-grandfather over 120 years ago, the property was a working farm for decades before the agricultural operations ceased after World War II. When Michael and his family took over seven years ago, the land was overgrown with chest-high weeds and thick brush. But with some serious hard work, a trusty brush cutter, and a passion for preservation, he transformed it into the welcoming RV retreat it is today.
Off-Grid Comforts for Campers
One of the things that sets Wilson Hollow apart is its blend of off-grid amenities and thoughtful details. For those of us who appreciate an outdoor shower but still want a touch of comfort, the solar-powered camp shower was a highlight. Built from raw lumber, it’s an off-grid setup that offers warm, propane-heated showers, making it easy to freshen up after a day of exploring the trails.
For campers without a bathroom in their RV, Michael installed a well-maintained port-a-john equipped with solar-powered ventilation fans and lighting, ensuring it’s cool and comfortable even in the summer heat. These amenities, along with the carefully maintained grounds, make Wilson Hollow feel more like a home away from home than a traditional campground.
Wide-Open Spaces & Endless Seclusion
One thing that really struck us at Wilson Hollow was the incredible sense of space. With 148 acres to explore, you’re not cramped up next to other RVs. Instead, you’re surrounded by nature, with trails winding through the property and connecting to the adjacent Penn State University forest grounds. The seclusion is a huge draw—there are no nearby houses or noisy distractions. It’s just you, the trees, and the wildlife. For those who value peace and quiet, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Perfect for Tailgating or Stargazing
Whether you’re heading to a Penn State football game or just want to unwind with friends, Wilson Hollow’s wide-open spaces make it an ideal spot for tailgating or hosting a private gathering. You can enjoy the privacy of a secluded spot while still having all the room you need to set up camp. And when the game’s over, be sure to look up—the dark skies at Wilson Hollow are perfect for stargazing, especially on clear nights.
Explore Nearby State Parks & Historic Sites
While Wilson Hollow itself is a paradise for nature lovers, there’s also plenty to see and do nearby. We found ourselves in a prime location, nestled between two state parks—Whipple’s Dam and Greenwood Furnace. Both are just a short drive away and offer amazing spots for fishing, boating, and hiking.
If you’re into fishing, you’ll love this area. From the stream right on the property to the famous Spruce Creek (where even President Jimmy Carter has cast a line), it’s a haven for anglers. You can catch rainbow and brown trout, or try your hand at fly fishing in the nearby creeks.
For a bit of local culture, head over to Belleville, home to the second-oldest Amish community in the U.S. Every Wednesday, the town hosts a bustling market where you can find everything from fresh produce to antiques. It’s a fun way to spend the day and soak up some of the region’s unique charm.
A Place to Unwind & Recharge
At Wilson Hollow, you can truly disconnect from the daily grind. The trails, meadows, and open spaces invite you to relax and take in the natural beauty all around. There’s a fire pit in the middle of the meadow, perfect for gathering around in the evenings. Michael even supplies the firewood, a mix of hickory and oak, so you can cook over the fire or just enjoy a cozy night under the stars.
What we appreciated most was how Wilson Hollow is set up to let you enjoy the quietude of the woods without sacrificing comfort. The entire place is meticulously maintained, and it’s clear just how much care Michael puts into every aspect of the property.
Experience Wilson Hollow for Yourself
If you’re looking for a unique RV destination that offers both seclusion and comfort, Wilson Hollow should be at the top of your list. Whether you’re there to attend a game, explore the local parks, or just relax, you’ll find yourself in a little slice of paradise. Tracy and I thoroughly enjoyed our time there, and we’re sure you will too.
